Useful Terminology to Help You with Your Carpet Shopping

    Last updated 6 months ago

Shopping for carpet shouldn’t be a challenge, and arming yourself with the right terminology can help. Knowing the different types of carpet and the installation options available can make shopping for new flooring a breeze, so take a look at some of the terms below to learn more before you start shopping.

    The Basics

The backing makes up the bottom portion of the carpet that you don’t see. Pile refers to the face of the carpet or the visible portion, which is made of yarn. Carpet cushion refers to any material placed under your carpet to create more of a feeling of softness or support underfoot, and can make the difference in the feel of your new carpet when you walk on it. An attached cushion is generally some type of cushioning material that is glued to the backside of your carpet to further supplement its dimensions and cushioning effects.

    Installation

Carpet can be installed via direct glue-down, which attaches the carpet to your floor with adhesive. A double glue-down method first installs cushioning via adhesive, then carpet over the cushion. Carpet can also be installed with a stretch-in method using tackless strips of wood or metal secured at the edges of a room to stretch and secure the carpet over a cushion. Stretch-in installation uses a power stretcher tool to prevent rippling or wrinkling after the carpet is installed. In places where two pieces of carpet meet, they form what is called a seam, which can be joined via adhesives or even hand sewing. One type of seam is a miter joint, where two pieces of your carpeting meet and are joined at an angle during the laying process.

Tips for Preventing Scratches, Scoring, and Scuffs in Your Hardwood Floors

    Last updated 6 months ago

The last things you want to see in your beautiful hardwood flooring are scratch or scuff marks marring its surface. The floors of your home are there to be walked on, but heavy usage can damage the look of your floors. Take a look at some of the tips below to learn how to protect your home’s hardwood floors from damage and keep them looking beautiful for years.

    Remove Your Shoes Indoors
One of the easiest ways to protect your hardwood floor is simply to take off your shoes while you’re indoors—and ask that your guests do the same. Shoes can be particularly hard on flooring, especially if you’re in a hurry, making it more likely that you’ll cause scuffs in your floor even if you’re wearing softer-soled shoes. By asking that you, your family, and everyone who enters your home removes their shoes at the door, you’ll help keep your hardwood floors scratch- and scuff-free.

    Clean Your Floors Regularly
Dirt and debris that accumulates on hardwood floors can cause scratches and scoring when you walk on it. Take the time to sweep, vacuum, and wipe down your floors on a regular basis to keep them free of dirt, dust, and anything else that may cover them over time. This will not only give them that new floor shine on a daily basis, but help keep them safer for your family and free of damage.

    Add Area Rugs
Area rugs are a great way to accentuate the decorative style of your home, adding punches of color or a cozy feel. They can also protect your hardwood floors, especially in areas that receive heavy traffic or have furniture. Place area rugs in common areas and halls to help relieve some of the wear your floor receives, helping to keep it free of marks and looking great.
